SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
Wolfwood’s one sole drive that keeps him going is the protection of the orphanage he grew up in. He would do anything- ANYTHING- to keep it and the children living there safe. He’s been raised by a cult to keep tabs on whoever they ask, force their opposition to walk the line, and kill them if they step outside of it. He knows what he does is wrong, and he feels some modicum of guilt over it, but it’s not enough to stop him from continuing on that path to hell. He’d rather see himself and his own morals destroyed than even risk the possibility that another child could be hurt the same way he was. So really, the dream could prey on anything. His desire for peace for the orphanage, or even the inadequacy he feels, like he’ll never be able to do enough or BE enough to prevent what he cares about from getting hurt or destroyed.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
The only reason he’s survived as long as he has is because Wolfwood refuses to die. His utter refusal to stop fighting for what he cares about is what propels him forward, and though one of his greatest fears- and biggest points of contention- is losing control and having his agency taken away from him, he still manages to adapt in spite of this because he knows he really has no choice. He doesn’t have the luxury of dying. There’s too much responsibility weighing on his shoulders. He looks in the face of fear and tells himself he’s been through worse. A transformation of himself would be no different than the transformation he endured at the hands of the Eye of Michael. And the loss of control…in the end, there’s nothing he can do about it but to keep going, because if he doesn’t, he’ll be dooming someone else to take his place. He might not be missed, but someone else certainly will.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
AbsoLUTELY slow and wary. Wolfwood comes off as sarcastic, dry, and irritating. He’s an asshole, he’s abrasive and doesn’t seem to take things seriously when he should. He’s also hugely pessimistic and believes that simply hoping for something to happen is more of a waste of time than reaching out to grab for it with your own two hands. The bonds he does form, whether he’d like to admit it or not, are deep and lasting. He doesn’t have that many to begin with, and those that he does he’s less willing to just throw away than what the surface might make you believe. Wolfwood is absolutely one of those prickly exteriors with a soft heart deep down, because it’s the way he’s learned to be to protect himself. It’s another way he’s developed to adapt, and to survive.
This means that his time in Somnia is going to be categorized a lot by the people he chooses to spend his time with, and how much he opts to actually open himself up to them, versus keeping them closed out to what he’s really like. It’s very possible that some people will see one side of Wolfwood, whereas others will see the side of him he more often keeps closely guarded for fear of damaging himself further. He’ll very likely end up with a lot of strained relationships, potentially more people he brushes up against the wrong way compared to people he actually gets along with. Couple that with the fact that they’re all changed in some way, physically and mentally, and it’s a recipe for both a potentially volatile disaster on one hand, and some actual, meaningful connections on the other. After all, should Wolfwood find a handful of people he’s able to really get close to, he’ll guard them fiercely, even if there’s a non-zero chance he’ll screw up along the way.
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
Wolfwood is constantly battling how much he cares for people he’s close to vs his wariness and inability to trust anyone other than himself. For home and Somnia, this means that even if he wants to do good by the people he loves, it’s difficult for him to pull his head out of his own ass long enough to realize that not everyone has it out for him. His learned defensiveness is as often a crutch as it is an adaptation, because more often than not he ends up pushing the people away that he cares about most. He missteps and fucks up constantly despite how deeply he cares, which can seem at odds with how he acts on the surface. He means well, but he lacks the capacity to be genuine a lot of the time which keeps his relationships with others at an arm’s length, when- in reality- he’d like to be a lot closer than he already is. If it were to come down to it, he’d rather be hated by those he loves and ensure their safety, than be loved knowing he’s putting them all in the direct line of fire. It’s more of a burden than even he realizes.
VESSEL SELECTION
Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? Offering
Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Wolfwood is literally called “The Punisher” by both his victims and his employers alike. He’s likened to being a beast, remorseless in his assassinations when he’s really just an acting pawn for a cult that has him firmly under their thumb. It would be exceptionally fitting for him to go from one state of being controlled to another, a literal attack dog for whoever happens to be holding the leash.
